The old lodge at Newark Cemetery will be demolished and a replacement built to preserve a number of trees

An old building in the town's cemetery is to be demolished and replaced with a new, custom-built building.

Newark Town Council's finance and general purposes committee agreed revised plans to demolish the old lodge at Newark Cemetery and erect a replacement near the entrance to Sparrow Lane.

But the original plans, approved back in 2017, would have included the removal of a number of trees within the conservation area.

So the members went back to the drawing board with Guy Taylor Associates and agreed to revise the plans, which will now see the existing lodge demolished after the new one has been built.

To avoid the felling of any trees, the new facility will be in the form of several smaller buildings placed among the trees and will provide space for storage, mess room and kitchen and a staff locker room and shower.

The new timber-clad buildings will be made to retain the tree-dominated character of the cemetery, as well as being able to retain the trees.

A capital budget of £186,000 has been approved for this project, but the town council is waiting for a report as to the official costs involved for the scheme.

Town clerk Alan Mellor said: "Our plan is to demolish the old building and replace it with a custom built building at the bottom end of the cemetery.

"The old building is not fit for purpose and it wouldn't be cost effective to renovate it."
