New chief executive for district council
A new chief executive has been appointed by Newark and Sherwood District Council, subject to formal approval by the council at a meeting on Tuesday.
Mr John Robinson, 51, of Bottesford, was recommended by the council’s chief officer’s appointment panel to become head of paid service and chief executive.
Mr Robinson is currently chief executive of Gedling Borough Council, having joined in 2008 as deputy chief executive.
He became chief executive 18 months later.
Previously, he held several senior positions at Nottingham City Council, most recently director of environmental services with responsibility for a wide range of front-line services.
Mr Robinson started his career in 1987 at Nottingham City, before taking up roles with Peterborough City Council in its committee and policy teams.
He has three sons, is a keen sportsman and likes to spend his spare time with his family watching and playing a wide variety of sports, especially football, cycling and running.
He has been a member of the board of West Nottinghamshire College for several years and was previously a director of Nottingham Regeneration Ltd.
Mr Robinson was the chairman of trustees of Trent Vineyard, one of the country’s largest churches, for seven years, and is a regular volunteer on community projects that support homeless and other vulnerable people.
Mr Roger Blaney, leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “I am delighted to announce the appointment of John as chief executive.
“As a serving and experienced chief executive, he was the unanimous choice to build on what is already a successful and strong organisation.
“He has successfully led large organisations, believes in partnership working and has a strong public service ethos.
“Coupled with commercial nous and skill, he is well-placed to lead Newark and Sherwood to continued success.”
Mr Robinson said: “It has been almost a decade since I came to Gedling and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time there.
“I have been privileged to work with hugely talented and committed elected members, employees and partners and am proud of what we have achieved together.
“After seven years as chief executive, I feel the time is right to move on and I am excited to be joining Newark and Sherwood, which I regard as another top-performing local authority.
“In the same way that my successor will take things forward from a strong base, I know that I am inheriting an excellent legacy at Newark and Sherwood, and look forward to exploiting the massive potential for further improving the quality of life for those who live, work and visit Newark and Sherwood.”
Mr Robinson is expected to take up his new role in July.
He replaces Mr Andrew Muter, who took the equivalent job on Alderney in the Channel Islands.
