New play area and community space in Thorney village opens thanks to grants from FCC Communities Foundation and Newark and Sherwood District Council

Villagers will benefit following the opening of the refurbished play area/community space.

Known as Thorney Play Park, the facility is officially up and running following a launch party attended by district councillor Linda Dales, parish councillors and Thorney residents at the facility on Main Street on Sunday.

The facility offers new play equipment for all ages of children together with the refurbished existing swings and see-saw.

In addition, there are new benches, some with games boards and surfacing to provide an outdoor community space accessible to all which was funded by a £37,000 grant from FCC Communities Foundation and a £5,000 grant from Newark and Sherwood District Council.

Chairman of the parish council Dean Sheehy said that the parish council was delighted that the project is now in use.

He said: “This vital facility is going to make a real difference to those who use it, as well as the wider Thorney community.

“We are extremely grateful to FCC Communities Foundation and Newark and Sherwood District Council for providing funding.

“In addition, we extend our thanks to local businesses AE Willows and Tillers Turf along with residents who also provided financial support as well as many hours of voluntary work, cleaning and painting the existing equipment.

“Furthermore, the support of Michael Miles of Flails Direct for supplying the paint, Damian Griffiths from CFS Fencing and Listers Timber merchants for supplying and installing the fence was much appreciated. Thanks also go to Damian and Emily Mumford of Springwood Tree Services for tree work and the donation of bird and bat boxes and offering to run a workshop for village children on building bug hotels in due course.

“Planting of spring bulbs to enhance the area is also kindly being provided by Nathan Willows Home Produce. We would not have been able to go ahead without their support.”

FCC Communities Foundation is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community projects through the Landfill Communities Fund.
