Newark’s National Civil War Centre commemorates Armistice Day with new exhibition
A new remembrance exhibition to commemorate Armistice Day has opened.
Residents can see the exhibition at the National Civil War Centre, Newark Museum.
Armistice Day, also known as Remembrance Day, is commemorated each year in the UK with a two-minute silence on November 11, and marks the agreement which brought the First World War to an end.
The exhibition includes fascinating objects such as a medal set and caps from the First World War, alongside a model of Newark Marketplace with soldiers embarking for France in 1914.
The display also includes invaluable documents of a Newark solider who served in the war, information which helps to tell his story and experiences during his time serving.
Rowan Cozens, deputy leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council and portfolio holder for heritage, culture, and the arts, said: “I am delighted we are able to commemorate Armistice Day by providing this exhibition, it gives residents a real insight into what life was like during the First World War.
“It’s only right that we remember those who served our country, and honour the sacrifices made to defend our nation.
“As a district council we will continue to do what we can to support those in the armed forces both in our district, and those working at the council enabling them to have care and support when they need it most.”
Neil Ross, Armed Forces Champion at the council, added: “I am really looking forward to visiting these new displays which act as a poignant reminder of all those who have, and are still serving, in the armed forces.
"Entry to the National Civil War Centre is free for Newark and Sherwood residents, so it provides the perfect place for some quiet contemplation or to share with your family to ensure the efforts of those who have fought for our country are never forgotten.”
The exhibition will be open until December 2024, with free entry for all Newark and Sherwood residents.
The National Civil War Centre is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am until 4pm, with a variety of galleries and activities for the whole family to enjoy.
