UK Men’s Sheds Association looks to strength regional community networks in East Midlands, North West and North East

Nationwide events will be taking place across the UK — including here in Newark — appealing for people to come forward and create safe spaces for men.

The UK Men’s Shed Association has announced three one-day events dedicated to those who run or want to establish an association in their community.

On Tuesday February 25, Newark Rugby Club will welcome the Men’s Sheds event, which are community spaces for men to ‘create, converse, and connect’, and those who would be interested in establishing a Men’s Shed in their community are invited to come along.

Two other events will be taking place on March 6 in Preston, Lancashire and on March 12 in Middlesbrough Town Hall, Teesside.

Many Sheds typically focus on providing a space where men can make friends over a cup of tea, with an increasing number of Sheds welcoming members of any gender.

They can also undertake a variety of activities, which include woodwork, metalwork, arts, crafts and upcycling, as well as cookery, electronics or even creative writing.

Research has shown Men’s Sheds help reduce loneliness and isolation, help build communities, and have a positive impact on both physical and mental health and wellbeing.

Data also shows how important they are in encouraging men to discuss and act on health-related issues and have even helped with suicide prevention.

Rachel Meadows, head of development at UKMSA said: “Men’s Shed really do have a hugely positive impact on participants, and the work they do often also benefits the wider community.

“There’s a wealth of knowledge within Sheds and we’re keen for Shedders to get together with other Sheds in their region to make new connections and share expertise.

“These informal meetings will feature panel discussions, roundtable debates and a chance for Shedders to get share experiences and discover what worked in different Sheds.”
