New look to riverside walk
A £229,000 riverside path that links two areas of Ollerton was officially opened this week.
The two-kilometre bridleway runs along the River Maun between Maida Lane and Whitewater Close and links to the Maun Valley Trail.
The path has been surfaced to make it easier for families with young children to take pushchairs on it.
There are interpretation boards along the route that gives information about the history and ecology of the River Maun.
A ten metre strip of land along the river was donated by the Thoresby Estate to allow the bridleway to be built.
The project includes planting of woodland around the Maun Valley area by The Greenwood Community Forest and the creation of a lay-by on Whitewater Lane.
It has been paid for with a £182,000 grant from Nottinghamshire County Council’s Building Better Communities scheme, £46,000 from Newark and Sherwood District Council, and £1,000 from Ollerton and District Economic Forum.
Mrs Stella Smedley, the county council’s cabinet member for environment and sustainability, and Ollerton’s county councillor, said: “This is a wonderful scheme that draws attention to the historic and ecological interests of the River Maun to the people of Ollerton.”
