New mayor a Londoner
The new Mayor of Newark is London-born Mr Harry Molyneux (67).
Mr Molyneux (Con) was born in Hackney. His family moved to Chingford Hatch, Essex, when he was six.
After school he worked as an apprentice motor fitter and in 1960 joined the Army, serving in the Royal Artillery.
He was posted to Germany as a radio signaller and driver.
In 1966 he was seconded to the Army Air Corps as an air observer and served in Malaysia and Borneo.
He left the Army in 1968 and trained as a maintenance fitter.
He worked for an engineering company for several years before retraining as an auto-electrician.
In 1986 he moved to Raunds in Northamptonshire and continued to work as an auto-electrician but also attended Wellingborough College where he studied for a City and Guilds in electrical installation and then became self-employed.
He joined the Corby branch of the Conservative Party in 1997 and, when he moved to Newark two years later, transferred his membership to the Newark and Retford division.
He has lived on Sandhill Road, Farndon, for seven years.
He has been a member of Newark Town Council for five years and is the vice-chairman of the planning committee. He was deputy mayor last year.
Mr Molyneux is also a member of Farndon Parish Council and serves on the executive committee of Newark Citizens’ Advice Bureau, is treasurer of the Friends of Newark Cemetery and represents the town council on Newark Mind.
He is a member of the Newark branch of the Royal Artillery Association, a member of Newark Town Bowls Club and a bridge player.
The mayoress will be his wife, Mrs Christine Molyneux. The couple have been married for 44 years.
They have two sons, Mr Daryl Molyneux (43) who lives in Kenilworth, and Mr David Molyneux (42) of Woking, and two grandsons, Ashley and Adam.
Mr Molyneux was nominated by Mr Peter Foster (Con) and seconded by Mr John Clark (Lab) both former mayors.
The leader of the council, Mr Max Cope, thanked the outgoing mayor and mayoress, Mr and Mrs Bryan Richardson, for their hard work and commitment over the past year.
The new deputy mayor is Conservative Mrs Rita Crowe (60) of Winchilsea Avenue, Newark.
She was elected to Newark Town Council in 2007 and is also a member of Newark and Sherwood District Council.
She has lived in Newark for almost 50 years and worked as a nurse, a dental nurse and then at the former Newark estate agency, Edward Bailey and Son, before joining the Woolwich Building Society where she was a branch manager at Newark, Lincoln and Nottingham.
She is now retired.
She has been a member of Newark Amateur Operatic Society for 45 years where she met her husband, Mr Robert Crowe. She is also a leading member of the Newark Twinning Association.
Mrs Crowe was nominated by Mrs Marika Tribe (Con) and seconded by Mr Richardson (Con).
Mr Cope remains the leader of the council and will continue to chair the finance and general purposes committee.
Mr Foster continues as the chairman of the planning committee and Mrs Tribe is to be the chairman of the environment and leisure committee, taking over from Mr David Nixon.
