BBC podcast tells the story of estate agent Stephanie Slater, kidnapped by Michael Sams and held in Newark

A new BBC podcast tells the story through tapes and interviews of the kidnapped estate agent Stephanie Slater, who was held in Newark by killer Michael Sams.

The Kidnapping of Stephanie Slater, released this week, tells the real-life story of the horrific crime with a mix of current interviews, audio drama and BBC archive from the time.

BBC radio journalist Andy Whittaker and criminal psychologist Dr Julia Shaw look back into the story of the woman who feared and fought for her life for over a week.

Sams, of Sutton-on-Trent, kidnapped Stephanie by posing as a housebuyer in Birmingham in 1992.

He kept the 25-year-old in a coffin-like box inside a wheelie-bin for eight days in his workshop in the Swan and Salmon yard in Newark for eight days until her company paid a £175,000 ransom.

Sams was given four life sentences in July 1993, convicted of the murder of Julie Dart, kidnap of Stephanie Slater and police extortion. He remains in prison.
