Newark asked to decorate town with daisies ahead of Children's Bereavement Centre's remembrance campaign

The residents and businesses of Newark are being asked to decorate the town with daisies ahead of a remembrance campaign.

The Daisy Remembrance Campaign is a community event organised by Newark-based charity the Children’s Bereavement Centre.

The event, which will see hundreds of metal daisies displayed as a meadow in Newark Castle's gardens, aims to bring people together in a shared grief and remembrance of lost loved ones.

People can support the event by donating a suggested £25 to the Children’s Bereavement Centre in return for an ornamental metal daisy which can be dedicated to the memory of a loved one.

The Meadow of Memories is a special and reflective event enabling families the chance to say goodbye and, this year, the daisies will be purple in honour of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

The daisy head can be removed so a special message can be written inside and visitors are also invited to bring along a remembrance ribbon.

It will take place on June 25 and 26 and on the Sunday evening, daisies can be collected to be kept at home, planted in a garden, or given as a gift to someone.

“The weekend provides a unique opportunity for children, young people, and their families to come together to remember and celebrate the lives of those they love and have lost," said Rachel Wilson, the charity's fundraising manager.

"After the last couple of years, we feel this is more important than ever.”

By getting involved, the community will not only be joining together to remember those special people who have died — but also help to ensure grieving families get the specialist support they need now and in the future.

Last year, the centre supported 923 local families and helped change the lives of young people, aged three to 18, who have experienced trauma due to the death or terminal illness of someone they love.

Businesses have already started to support the campaign. Get involved by decorating the town centre with daisies, post box toppers and bunting in the lead-up to the event.

Marie Edwards of Mee and You Networking (meeandyou.co.uk) volunteered to help decorate the bereavement centre’s windows on Monday, and donated five purple window pens.

If you would like to donate £5 for a pen to decorate your own shop windows, or if you can help with community decoration, email katiegibson@childrensbereavementcentre.co.uk
