Newark-based Centrum Piles Ltd pledges to investigate more sustainable materials
A construction company has pledged to investigate more sustainable materials for use in their products.
Centrum Piles Ltd, based in Newark, is one of the UK’s leading precast concrete pile manufacturers.
The company is looking into alkali activated cementitious materials, which are materials that gain strength by means of a chemical reaction between a source of alkali.
Using this technology can vastly improve the performance characteristics of the material in comparison to conventional cement-based materials, thus contributing to the sustainability of the built environment.
The business has announced its participation in the Low Carbon Concrete in Aggressive Ground project, which has been awarded funding by Innovate UK.
Innovate UK is the UK’s innovation agency, a non-departmental public body operating at arm’s length from the government as part of the United Kingdom Research and Innovation organisation.
This initiative is a major move by Centrum Pile Ltd, which aims to reduce its carbon footprint and balance business aims with a commitment towards protection of the environment.
A director of Centrum, Paul Pendleton, said: “We as an industry and as a business needed to find a better way to play the old game.
“If the trials are successful, then Centrum will be at the forefront of potentially one of the biggest environmental game changers that this industry has ever seen and will be able to offer our customers the choice to reduce the embodied CO² of their piles within their project.”
Centrum Pile Ltd recently became corporate partners of the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust.
