Elderly Newark grandmother's frustration with mice infestation coming from Newark and Sherwood Homes property next door
Mice have caused sleepless nights for an elderly Newark resident.
Florence Haycock, 86, of Trinity Road, has been living with mice in her home for seven months.
The property next door, owned by Newark and Sherwood Homes, is infested with rodents and the mice have started to make their way into her home.
The mice first started to appear a few months ago so Flo and her family put down traps and poison to get rid of the vermin.
But in the last month, the pests have returned with a vengeance and Flo has been woken in the night by the sounds of mice scurrying through the walls.
The family has found mice droppings all through the house, which includes underneath the sink, in her airing cupboard, in cupboards and even under her pillow.
"I have to sleep with the light on now," Flo said. "It's not right that I have to live like this.
"I'm even wary of having my grandchildren and great-grandchildren round, you just don't know what you're going to find."
Flo has lived in her house for 60 years and has even considered going to stay with family, but said she is worried about the infestation getting worse while she is gone.
The council property next door has been vacant for seven months.
When Flo's grand-daughter Jenni Jackson contacted Newark and Sherwood Homes, she was told nothing could be done for her grandmother because she owned her own home, and the property next door was still under a tenancy agreement.
"It's so wrong that she has to live this way, it's unhygienic and she's scared to sleep. She's 86 and this shouldn't be happening," said Jenni.
