Hundreds of people turned out to watch the return of dragon boat racing to Newark on Sunday.

The fundraising festival, organised by the Children's Bereavement Centre and Beaumond House Community Hospice, saw 27 teams from local businesses and charities competing in the Dragon Boat Festival, with Watery Doing Here winning the race and the competition overall.

The event was to raise vital funds for both charities through sponsorship from the teams racing and revenue from land-based activities. The final amount raised is still being counted.

Rachel Wilson of the Children’s Bereavement Centre and Jo Harbord of Beaumond House Community Hospice said:

“Wow what an amazing day. There are not enough words to express our joint gratitude for the support we received for the Newark Dragon Boat Festival 2019.

"From the launch of the event in March, we have been overwhelmed by the response we have received. As two local charities we wanted to organise an event the whole community could be involved in as well as raising vital funds.

"As always, the amazing people of Newark rose to the challenge and their generosity shone though, there was great atmosphere and it was a truly fantastic day.

"To the 27 companies racing, the headline sponsors, the many companies that supported us by donating goods and services, the entertainers, the stall holders, the volunteers and the thousands that turned out to watch the racing and enjoy the event, a heartfelt thank you.

"Your support means so much to both the Children’s Bereavement centre and Beaumond House, and we are already looking forward to Newark Dragon Boat Festival 2020.”
