A Newark man who stole jewellery worth more £4,000 in two thefts from a woman has been sent to prison for 40 weeks.

Timothy Drury, 34, of Strawberry Hall Lane, stole a Marks and Spencer shopping bag containing £70, fish goujons and make-up worth a total of £175 on the first occasion.

A week later he took a make-up bag containing bank cards, cheque books and jewellery worth £4,605.

Drury admitted two charges of theft. He was jailed for 16 and 24 weeks respectively by Nottingham magistrates, who ordered the sentences to run consecutively.

The court was told the offences were serious and mean, and that Drury had an appalling record.

He also admitted causing damage worth £290 to plants and a display unit at Asda, Newark.

For this offence, Drury received a four-week concurrent prison sentence.
