The sentencing of a man from Montgomery Road, Newark at Nottingham Crown Court Court after causing a collision involving several cars at Northgate, Newark was adjourned
A 21-year-old man’s court case was adjourned as the judge told him he didn’t understand how serious his case was and he was liable for deportation.
Alex Matei, of Montgomery Road, Newark, appeared for sentencing at Nottingham Crown Court today (February 25) after he was involved in a serious collision near the junction of Northgate with Meyrick Road on July 23, 2023.
The collision left a woman in hospital with serious injuries. Another man was treated in hospital and later released, and several parked cars were also damaged.
Matei, aged 20 at the time of the accident, was arrested on July 25 and released on conditional bail, with a ban from driving and prohibited from contacting any of the people involved.
He was charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving; using a passenger vehicle with tyres with insufficient tread, and failing to stop and report the accident.
On October 11, Matei appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty, but the charges were deemed too serious for the sentencing to the dealt with by Magistrates Court and was sent to Crown Court.
Matei, originally from Romania and living in the UK with a settled status, appeared in court wearing his work clothing and representing himself, to which Her Honour Judge Dempster said: “I don’t think you understand how serious this is.
“This is very serious.”
The court also heard that the minimum prison sentence for the offences would be three years, and that he was liable to be deported.
Matei was set to be sentenced today, however he was given a break to be advised by defence barrister Mr Wesley, who represented him previously at Magistrates’ Court, and once the court reconvened, it was heard that Matei had chosen to seek legal representation.
The sentencing was adjourned until May 15 at Nottingham Crown Court, and he was released on conditional bail until then.
