Newark, Newark TV sitcom filmed on cobbles of market place with lead Mathew Horne's character taking a kicking
Newark Market Place became the set for a new sitcom today (Thursday) and there was plenty of action being filmed.
Lead actor Mathew Horne, of Gavin & Stacey fame and from Lowdham, or rather a stunt double, took a pasting from a group of lads after remonstrating with a stallholder over a faulty sale to his mother-in-law.
Cast and crew were filming scenes for the sitcom Newark, Newark, which follows pugnacious chip shop manager and exhausted matriarch Maxine as she tries to ride out her divorce, despite dullard ex-husband Terry trying to win her back.
Actors Beverley Callard of Coronation Street and Morgana Robinson, Pippa Middleton in The Windsors, were also involved in the filming and at one point during the fight, leap into a van that speeds away along the cobbles of the market place.
Interested members of the public could stand and watch the scenes being filmed.
Newark, Newark is new Gold TV show based in the town of Newark.
It also stars EastEnders' Nina Wadia as Heather and Jai Hollis (Green Fingers) as Maxine’s son Leslie, who dramatically comes out as gay to the surprise of no one.
The comedy has been written by Newark's Nathan Foad, who also has a supporting role.
He said: "Making Newark, Newark is my wildest dream come true.
"If I could go back in time and tell my teenage self anything, I'd look him straight in his chubby little face and I'd say 'growing up different in this town might not be easy, but one day they're gonna let you make a TV show about it. Also, learn to breathe through your nose'.
"I'd like to thank (programme-makers) Balloon Entertainment, UKTV and our phenomenal cast and crew — I think we might be making something a bit special."The broadcaster said the show captures the goofy, sticky oddness of long English summers and the joyous, comforting and somewhat ridiculous things that go on in a small town."
Three 40-minute episodes are due to air early next year and also star Saskia Chana (The Forgotten C), Jessie Mae Alonzo (Little Joe) and Vahid Gold (Emerald City).
