Newark Town Council expresses solidarity and sorrow with Nottingham over killings of Barnaby Webber, Grace O'Malley-Kumar and Ian Coates ahead of city vigil tonight

A minute of silence to honour the victims of this week’s terrible events in Nottingham has been observed by Newark Town Council.

Before the start of a town council meeting last night (Wednesday), all councillors, the town clerk, officers, and members of the public, stood in silence for one minute to pay their respects.

They hold in their thoughts those who lost their lives, their familes, their friends, their loved ones, the bereaved and the injured.

“All our thoughts are with the victim’s families, those injured, the emergency services and the entire city.”

All are invited to join in a vigil to mourn the tragic events of Tuesday in Old Market Square in Nottingham this evening from 5.30pm.

Lord Mayor Carole McCulloch and city council leader David Mellen will be joined by Shearer West, vice-chancellor at the University of Nottingham, and faith leaders for minute's silence at 6pm.

Police have been granted more time to question a 31-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murdering three people in knife attacks in the city early on Tuesday.

Two 19-year-old University of Nottingham first-year students, Barnaby Webber and Grace O'Malley-Kumar, were stabbed to death in Ilkeston Road and primary school caretaker Ian Coates in Magdala Road.

Mr Coates’ van was then suspected to have been stolen and used to drive at pedestrians, leaving three people in hospital, one of them in a critical condition.

Families of the three who died joined hundreds of students at a vigil at Nottingham Uni on Wednesday.
