The new Newark MP, Robert Jenrick, victorious in last week's by-election, has been sworn-in in the House of Commons today.

Mr Jenrick was officially led in to the Commons by Sherwood MP and fellow Tory Mark Spencer.

He was welcomed into the role by Prime Minister David Cameron who visited the constituency four times during Mr Jenrick's campaign.

There was a welcome by the influential 1922 Committee of backbench Conservatives, at which the Prime Minister was also to be present.

Later, a reception at 10 Downing Street for Mr Jenrick and his family is planned which will be hosted by the Prime Minister and his wife Samantha, and the Foreign Secretary, William Hague.

Mr Hague was the last Tory to win a by-election with the party in Government when he won Richmond, Yorkshire, in 1989.

Mr Hague described himself to the Advertiser on one of his three visits to the constituency during the campaign as the "by-election mascot."

Many of the hundreds of Conservative MPs and the front-bench ministers who joined Mr Jenrick on the campaign trail are expected to attend.
