NHS 75th anniversary: A look back at Newark Hospital over the decades through the Newark Advertiser archives
To mark the 75th anniversary of the NHS, the Advertiser has opened its photographic archives to look back over seven decades of Newark Hospital.
The NHS was born on July 5, 1948, as the first universal health system to be available to all, free at the point of delivery.
It now treats more than a million people every day from all walks of life, from the most simple of ailments to complex medical needs.
Over the years the treatments have changed and developed, but the care that was at the heart of the service from the very start still remains strong today.
Newark Hospital has been at the heart of health provision in Newark much longer than the NHS has been in existence, providing for the people of the town and surrounding areas.
The Advertiser’s photographic archive runs from the very early days of the NHS in the 1950s to present day.
Here are a selection of photos from across the decades.
They include images of staff who have worked at the various hospital sites over the years and rare photos of inside the various hospital departments.
Over the years there have also been many visitors to the hospital, including some famous faces.
And although the hospital was part of the NHS, it still relied to some extent on donations from the public – and there have been many.
It is also reliant on his army of volunteers who provide support for staff.
And, there have been times when the hospital’s future has seen to be under threat, and each time the public have stepped up to defend its service.
Whatever the event, they have been covered by the Advertiser.
