Not all pubs in Newark and Sherwood will open up immediately

Some pubs will not re-open this weekend, despite the government’s decision to ease lockdown.

As a small pub, the Castle and Falcon, on London Road, Newark, would struggle with social distancing.

Tenant landlord David Cumberland, who was due to retire in June, said it may open in two weeks.

But his wife, Dawn, warned: “It may not be viable. We are a small pub and would need somebody on the loos as well as behind the bar.

“If we were to get people outside, we would need to make room for social-distancing.”

Another pub not opening on Saturday is Oscar’s Inn on London Road, Newark.

Owner Jackie Jackson said: “I was very critical of the government for the way they put us into lockdown. We went in on a Friday and it was chaos. People were trying to squeeze in as many drinks as possible before closing and were coughing all over staff.

“Now we are recommended to open on a Saturday and I fear it will be chaos.

“We certainly won’t be opening on Saturday and will open on a weekday.

“OK, we may miss the peak and all of the money but we will avoid the chaos and open again more sedately.

“We have a responsibility to keep our staff and our customers safe.”

When it does re-open, Oscars will be use its carpark for outside seating and operate a one-way system inside.
