Mr Gregory was born in Derby on Coronation Day of June 2, 1953, and so received a silver spoon and Bible from the Queen.

He was educated in Ilkeston at Granby Primary School and Hallcroft Senior School.

Mr Gregory started his career in the motor industry as a trainee salesman with Broughtons, which was on Farndon Road, on May 1, 1977 — selling his first car by 11am.

In 1988 he joined with Joe Spurr to set up Gregory-Spurr and continued to run the business after Mr Spurr moved on.

Gregory-Spurr sponsored the Sherwood Lions girls’ football club.

Mr Gregory was also a member of Newark and Barnby breakfast clubs.

Mr Gregory retired to Northern Cyprus with his long-time partner Wendy in 2012.

However, his passion for selling cars continued and he got a part-time job working with the Tiga Trading Family in Cyprus until his condition forced him to stop.

While in Cyprus, he was a committee member for the Northern Cyprus Cancer Charity Trust.

His funeral is a week today at 2.30pm at Sherwood Forest Crematorium followed by a wake at Newark Rugby Club from 4pm.

It is family flowers only, but donations can be made to Alzheimer’s Research UK via https://robert-gregory-1953-2022.muchloved.com/

Mr Gregory leaves his partner Wendy, son Alex, stepchildren Garry and Emma, and grandchildren Freya, Molly, Annabelle and Cameron.
