Offering use of sport site

Clubs have been offered free use of a sports field providing they maintain the area.

The disused site, Beckitts Field at Little Carlton, is owned by South Muskham and Little Carlton Parish Council, which wants sport played there again.

The council said sports clubs could use it and the only cost would be maintenance.

There is a pavilion, which is slowly falling into disrepair.

The field was previously used by South Muskham and Little Carlton Cricket Club, which folded two years ago.

Coddington Cricket Club also previously played friendly games there.

It is believed the field was first used as a cricket field in 1949. The pavilion has been there for about 35 years.

The land belonged to the Beckitt family and was bequeathed to the village in the late 1970s providing it was made available to South Muskham and Little Carlton Cricket Club for as long as it wanted.

The parish council chairman, Mr Howard Clack, said they would welcome approaches from all kinds of sports clubs, but use of the site would be subject to approval by the council.

Mr Clack said if people used the field they could look at refurbishing the pavilion through grants and donations.

Refurbishment was likely to cost about £6,000.

“We want to get it back it its former glory. We need a revival,” Mr Clack said.

“It will enhance the village if we use it as a sports facility. It is something we should not lose.”

Mr Clack said the council would refurbish an outbuilding with toilets and storage and carry out work on another storage outbuilding.

He said the work included demolishing another outbuilding that contained asbestos. The work should cost £2,000 and should be completed by early next year.

A former captain of the cricket club, Mr Ian Harrison, the chairman of North Muskham Parish Council, said: “It would be tragic to think it might never used as a cricket ground again.

“I thoroughly enjoyed every season at Little Carlton and it was a privilege to captain that club.”
