On two wheels to aid charity
A chiropractor hopes to complete a 300-mile cycle ride to raise £5,000 for a children’s charity that has helped his daughter.
Dr Andrew Adams (38) of Cotgrave, who runs the Newark Chiropractic Clinic, Castlegate, will cycle from Big Ben, London, to the Eiffel Tower in Paris to raise money for the Children’s Liver Disease Foundation.
The journey, from August 27-30, will be completed by Dr Adams and five family friends.
Dr Adams is keen to support the Children’s Liver Disease Foundation as his daughter, Hannah Adams (seven months) was born with the liver disease, biliary atresia.
There is no known cure. The only treatments are surgical procedures or liver transplants.
Hannah has so far had to endure two major operations, and has to have regular blood tests and take vitamin supplements and medication.
There is an 80% chance she will need a liver transplant before the age of 20.
Dr Adams said it was important to support the charity so it could continue to carry out research into curing liver disease and provide support for parents of children born with the condition.
He said it could be distressing for parents when they found out that the causes and cures of the disease were unknown.
He said: “For us, one of the big things is that we find out why the disease happens so we can help the parents of children with the disease.”
Dr Adams, who is cycling 60 to 100 miles a week in preparation for the ride, has already raised £1,600 but is determined to reach his £5,000 target.
