Leicestershire Police and the county's fire and rescue service are investigating following a fatal house fire in Bottesford.

Emergency services were called out to reports of a house fire in Grantham Road at about 1.50pm this afternoon.

The fire is believed to have spread to a number of neighbouring properties. Nearby homes were evacuated while fire crews tackled the blaze.

One person died in the fire and an investigation to determine the cause is ongoing. A stretch of Grantham Road remains closed.

A resident from neighbouring Easthorpe Road, who asked not to be named, said she saw the fire begin in the middle of a row of three cottages.

"There are a row of cottages on Grantham Road, one caught fire and it's affected the ones either side," she said.

"It was awful, at first the front of the house was affected and then it spread."

"I can't believe something like this has happened here."
