Flossie & Boo in Newark Market Place closes it doors

An independent shop in the heart of town has closed its doors after five years of trading.

Flossie & Boo, on Newark Market Place, closed after owner Carly Carpenter made the ‘tough’ decision to take her business fully online.

“It was a really tough decision,” Carly said.

“The business is named after my two children (Bertie and Florence), one of whom was just a baby when I started, so there are a lot of sentimental emotions attached. But it felt like the right time to make this change, for my family and for the future of the business.”

The shop, which first opened in 2020, sold a range of gifts, toys, and clothing for children from birth to teens and also offered a pre-loved section of clothes and shoes.

It survived a number of lockdowns throughout the pandemic and celebrated a grand reopening in October 2023, when the shop saw its original 1920s façade back to its original glory.

The shop owner said: “It wasn’t a failing business.

“This was a choice for a better work-life balance.

“I’ve had amazing customers who’ve supported me so loyally, and I’m incredibly grateful.”

As a thank you to the Newark community for its support, Carly is offering free delivery to all Newark orders made through the website.

While Flossie & Boo will no longer have a physical presence in Newark for now, Carly isn’t ruling out a return to the high street.

She added: “There’s nothing to say I won’t open another shop in the future.

“But for now, it’s online only and I’ll also be doing pop-up events around Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, which people can look out for on our social media.”
