The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating a police pursuit prior to a fatal road traffic incident in Nottinghamshire last month.

Police sighted a stolen Vauxhall Corsa at around 11 pm near Nottingham on Monday November 14.

The IPCC says that initially a police vehicle followed the stolen car before the Corsa suddenly accelerated. It says the suspect car travelled at some speed and then two other police vehicles also engaged in a pursuit of the Corsa.

On Moor Lane, Calverton, the Corsa left the road and crashed into a tree.

The driver of the Corsa sustained serious injuries.

Officers treated him at the scene but he died at the Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham, shortly afterwards.

The entire incident from the time the Corsa was sighted lasted around five minutes.

Nottinghamshire Police referred the incident to the IPCC that night and an IPCC investigator was deployed to carry out an assessment.

It has since been decided an independent investigation will be carried out.

IPCC investigators have begun to undertake enquiries, examine police logs and recordings, and recover any relevant CCTV footage.

Initial accounts from police officers involved have been taken.

The deceased has since been named as Dale Wilson, 26, of Aspley.

An IPCC investigator has met with Mr Wilson’s family recently to explain its role and how the investigation will progress.

IPCC Commissioner Amerdeep Somal said: "This was a fluid situation that developed rapidly over a matter of a few minutes from the time police initially spotted the stolen vehicle.

"While it appears at this stage that appropriate authority was gained for the pursuit, it is right where a fatality has occurred that we verify that Nottinghamshire Police officers followed all relevant procedures.”
