Person dies after being struck by a train close to Newark Northgate Station

A person has died after being struck by a train near Newark Northgate station - British Transport police has confirmed.

The police were alerted just before 10.40am this morning and emergency services were called to the scene.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: "We’ve been called to the line close to Newark Northgate station after reports a person had been struck by a train.

"We are in attendance alongside the local ambulance service however a person has sadly been pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are in the process of identifying the person and informing their family."

Barnby Road level crossing is currently closed as well as the sustrans track between Barnby Road and Newark Northgate Train Station.

Both northbound and southbound lines have now re-opened in both directions but delays of up to 90 minutes remain on the East Coast Main Line.
