Cycling enthusiast Mike Froggatt launches petition for free-to-use Newark pump track
Calls to provide a free-to-use pump track in Newark have been made by a cycling enthusiast.
Mike Froggatt, from Newark, said Newark and Sherwood District Council and Newark Town Council needed to work together to provide BMX facilities for the town’s residents.
“People in Newark have been asking the council for a pump track — a small, looping trail that you can ride continuously without even pedalling — for a number of years,” said Mike.
“With the recent surge in cycling, I feel now is the best time for councils to invest in the future of cycling.
“There used to be a BMX track in Newark (on Bowbridge Road) but it was demolished and houses have been built on the land.
“No replacement has been offered as far as I know.
“Pump tracks provide great exercise and are fun for young children, youths and adults alike.”
Mike has started a petition to help push his message, which has amassed more than 250 signatures since its creation.
“The comments left on the petition page show the general feeling that there are not enough recreational facilities for young people in Newark,” said Mike.
“Newark and Sherwood council has recently invested in a new mini-pump track in Edwinstowe.
“There’s also a new pump track in West Bridgford which is ideal for young children.
“At the weekends, it is absolutely full of children riding BMX, mountain bikes, scooters and skateboards.
“Best of all, it’s free to use. I’d really like to see a facility like that here in Newark.”
Benjamin Jones, who has signed the petition, said: “I believe in everyone being able to lead an active lifestyle in an engaging and fun way. It would be great if things like this were on people’s doorsteps.”
Karina Hillier said: “My son and his friends would love this. Newark really is lacking in free activities for the youth of today.”
Newark and Sherwood District had not responded to a request for comment by the time of going to press.
