GALLERY: A look back at Yeomen Of The Guard at Newark Castle from July, 1969

FIFTY years ago this week crowds flocked into Newark Castle for one of the most ambitious productions staged in the town.

Professional actors — including Donald Adams as Sergeant Meryll and Thomas Round as Colonel Fairfax — worked alongside local amateurs for the staging of the Gilbert and Sullivan classic The Yeomen Of the Guard.

Months of work and preparation went into the staging of the operetta, including the transformation of the castle grounds.

And it paid off with around 10,000 people watching during the week-long run. Many of the nights sold out.

The impact of the production was felt throughout the town, with emergency traffic arrangements put into place, and several fringe events organised, including a huge medieval market in the Market Place.

The Advertiser has delved into its archive to find the photographs from the rehearsals and opening night performance.
