Reader's letter: Poetic plea for decent hot cross bun

Easter is a movable feast but always comes in spring,

And when I was a little girl, I loved what it would bring.

On Easter morning hunting eggs wrapped up in silver foil,

While mum was in the kitchen bringing real eggs to the boil.

But even better than chocolate (which I like far too well)

Were hot cross bus on Friday, with the lovely yeasty smell.

Stuffed with fruit and dripping butter they were so delicious,

But what the shops have done to them is really too malicious.

Now if you buy them in the aisles, even if they’re “the best”.

You’d think they were only normal buns, in a blindfold test.

Yes, I know what the answer is, just bake them off myself,

But it’s so much lazier and simple when they’re sitting on the shelf.

So, come on all you retailers, please don’t make me feel so glum,

Produce just once a year, a really decent hot cross bun. — ROSEMARY PRATT, via email.
