Flooding in Lowdham has closed roads and caused chaos
A major incident has been announced following flooding in the district.
Heavy rainfall has seen flooding at a number of properties in the Merevale Close area of Lowdham (Lowdham's Main Street pictured below).
At least 50 properties have been affected by flood water in a mixture of private and sheltered housing.
The village hall has been established as a rest centre and Nottinghamshire County Council is sending adult social care officers to Lowdham to assist with the evacuation of those requiring assistance.
Police are also sending two 4x4 vehicles to assist and the British Red Cross is also en route to the scene.
There are currently 11 flood warnings in place, including, Cocker Beck at Lowdham, the River Maun at Edwinstowe and Ollerton, the River Smite at Aslockton and Whatton, and the River Devon at Bottesford, Easthorpe, Muston and Woolsthorpe.
District council community protection officers are currently using a mechanical road sweeper to assist with the clear up operation in Lowdham.
Flooding is also possible at other River Trent Tributaries and at the River Trent from Cromwell Weir and River Witham in North Kesteven.
There are also reports of very slow traffic on the A17 in both directions between Beckingham and Brant Broughton.
This comes after sections of the A1, the A52 and A46 were closed this morning due to flooding.
Superintendent Paul Burrows from Nottinghamshire Police said: “Nottinghamshire Police has received a number of calls about the overnight flooding and I would like to reassure the public that a joint police, fire, ambulance, council and highways response is now well underway to help keep people and their properties safe – and help keep disruption to an absolute minimum.
“I would encourage people to only travel if their journey is absolutely necessary and to check local news, weather and traffic updates before they travel.
“We have declared the flooding to be a major incident and are, of course, continuing to monitor the situation as it unfolds. We are continuing to follow weather forecasts as part of our ongoing response to the significant amount of rainfall we have seen overnight.”
