Police dog sniffs out dangerous Newark driver Stefan Ward hiding behind bin
A dangerous driver who accelerated up to 80mph in Newark was sniffed out by Police Dog Quantum when he tried to hide behind a wheelie bin.
Following a report of suspicious activity, the man in his Citroen Saxo was followed by a response officer and an armed response vehicle who tracked him.
The car sped through red lights, mounted pavements, hitting a fence, on the wrong side of the road and narrowly missed on-coming vehicles.
The car eventually stopped and the driver decamped. He was quickly arrested after he was pursued by Quantum and was found to be behind the bin. After a search of his car a bag of cannabis was also seized.
Stefan Ward, 29, of Vessey Close in Newark, was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court to prison for four months.
He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and possession of a class B controlled substance (cannabis).
The charge relates to an incident in August 31, 2020, in Newark where officers on a proactive patrol followed a report of a man acting suspiciously.
Police Constable Stuart Howe led the investigation. He said: "Ward took the lives of others into his own hands when he dangerously drove through the Newark streets without any regard for the safety of others.
"It was lucky that he didn't strike another vehicle or pedestrian.
"We are glad that we have now been able to hold him to account for his criminal activity.
"Along with dangerous driving, we take drug offences very seriously, and work to eradicate it throughout Nottinghamshire."
