Police probe assault over county show weekend
Police were called to Newark Showground at 1.30am on Sunday following a report that two men had been assaulted.
Many competitors and exhibitors were staying the night at the showground between Saturday and Sunday because of the Newark and Nottinghamshire County Show.
A section of the showground near the Lamma building by the Joe Hallam pavilion was cordoned off and a forensic examination of the scene was carried out.
A 39-year-old Norfolk man was taken to Lincoln County Hospital for treatment to a fractured cheekbone.
A 33-year-old man, also from Norfolk, received hospital treatment for facial bruising and a hand injury.
Two men from the Sussex area were arrested at the showground around an hour and a half later and questioned by police.
Today, Monday, Mr Jez McGee, aged 21, of Shoreham, has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
He remains in police custody and will appear at Newark Magistrates' Court tomorrow (Tuesday).
A 20-year-old man has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
