Police have launched a murder investigation following the death of a 31-year-old woman in Newark.

The woman's body was found in an apartment at Dobson's Quay in The Wharf area last night.

A police cordon is in place while scenes of crime officers are carrying out forensic examinations.

It is believed the woman was found in a downstairs apartment.

A 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is in police custody being questioned by detectives.

Publican Frank Dyson, who runs The Barge which is moored on The Wharf, said he was finishing work at around 7.30pm last night when the police turned up.

"I was just leaving when three or four police cars roared up with their blues and twos going," he said.

"Officers were running in and out of Dobson's Quay and they put a cordon up across the top of the street.

"Dobson's Quay is quite an upmarket place. To think that something like this could happen here is shocking and quite frightening.

"A lot of very nice people live there. Some of them are regular customers and it worries me that I could know the people involved."

A Home Office pathologist will carry out a post mortem on the woman today to establish the cause of death.

Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to call Nottinghamshire Police on 0300 300 99 99 or Crimestoppers, free and in confidence, on 0800 555 111.
