Police urge vehicle security consciousness

Motorists who intend to make the most of the bank holidays are being urged to keep their vehicles safe.

Police say where possible drivers should use registered car parks only to increase the safety of their cars.

Motorists are also being urged to ensure their vehicles don’t act as a temptation to thieves by making sure valuables are not left on show.

Inspector Andy Townsend said: “Several public holidays are approaching, which usually means lots of people heading out to town and city centres and to local beauty spots.

“This can often result in an increase in car crime, sometimes because people opt for free parking by using side streets instead of utilising car parks, which are more secure and offer more safety.

“People should also be reminded to keep personal belongings out of view. Items like Sat Navs should not be left on show – even the ring left on a windscreen by a sat nav holder can highlight to a thief that there is something valuable inside the vehicle.”

Officers will be conducting increased patrols over the bank holiday period and will be handing out cards and leaflets containing crime prevention advice.

Inspector Townsend said: “Many people may also be planning to get away to the countryside and may visit local country parks. They should be reminded that car crime happens in these places too, and they should take the same precautions to ensure their vehicles are safe."
