Power jobs on offer to trainees
The energy company building the new £660m gas-fired Staythorpe Power Station hopes to recruit two local apprentices.
The successful recruits will train alongside skilled engineers and can look forward to a challenging and rewarding future within RWE npower, says the company.
Mr Andy Marshall, the power station manager, said: “It is an exciting time for Staythorpe Power Station with construction now well under way.
“In order to deliver a successful, well-operated power station, it is vital that we have a strong and dedicated team of people in place.
“The two new apprentices will be an invaluable addition to the team.
“We are looking for dedicated candidates that will work alongside the operations and engineering staff, providing an excellent opportunity for those who wish to begin a successful career in the power industry.”
The apprentices will gain skills and an industry-recognised qualification.
The advanced apprenticeship in power plant operations is a new fast-track two-year programme that has been developed in conjunction with the Energy and Utilities Skills Council (EUSC) requiring specific additional entry qualifications and will be managed by RWE npower’s learning and development team.
The engineering advanced apprenticeship is an established four-year programme that is approved by the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
It offers training in a choice of one of the following core engineering trade areas: control and instrumentation, mechanical or electrical engineering.
In total, the power station will create around 80 long-term operational jobs.
While most of these will be technical and engineering roles, there will also be a number of support and administrative positions available.
Unions have protested about what they say is a lack of jobs for skilled UK labour in the above-ground construction phase at Staythorpe where many workers are from overseas.
While protests continue at the power station gates, the Advertiser understands the company building the power station for RWE npower, Alstom Power, is in the process of interviewing for around 30 posts that were advertised through Newark Jobcentre.
