Winthorpe Primary School celebrate 140th anniversary ahead of open day
A primary school has celebrated its 140th anniversary after it opened in a village in 1879, writes Dolores Hancock.
Staff and pupils at Winthorpe Primary School marked the occasion with a birthday party and birthday cake made by parent Verity McLuckie.
Students learned about the history of the school alongside photographs — some of which were over 100 years old.
The old log book that listed the original cost of the school's building at just £925, and the punishment books that listed any bad behaviour and discipline given, were of particular interest to current pupils.
In recent years the school, now with a record high number of students, has made significant improvements to its building and grounds, as well as adopting a work hard, have fun culture into school life.
These improvements and changes have been reflected in a good Ofsted report. The school also achieved a Gold Active Mark — a Government led points initiative — for sport provision and participation for the second year running.
Winthorpe Primary School is to hold an open morning on Wednesday, November 27, where prospective parents, former staff and pupils will be warmly invited for a tour of the school.
