Barred customer allegedly doused The Buttercross Wetherspoon pub in petrol, causing police cordon in Bingham town centre




A barred customer allegedly poured petrol over a pub and staff member, causing a police cordon to be put in place in a town centre.

The incident occurred at Bingham’s The Buttercross, a Wetherspoon pub.

Nottinghamshire Police reported that officers were called to a disturbance in Market Place, Bingham, shortly before 3pm yesterday (Thursday).

A nearby business owner confirmed firefighters and paramedics were also at the scene.

In a statement at the time the police said: “A commercial premises has been evacuated and a cordon put in place. Officers will remain in the area as investigations continue.

“As part of this incident officers were also deployed to a premises in Main Street, Stathern, where a man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of assault.”

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “A customer at the pub was barred. He returned to the pub with some petrol and poured it over the front of pub and also a pub employee had some petrol spilt on him.

“An elderly customer also slipped on the petrol and hurt himself.

“The police have dealt with the individual. The pub is now cordoned off and is a crime scene.

“The fire brigade have attended and said the pub will need to be fumigated overnight (Thursday) and aired out to make it safe.”

The pub has not yet re-opened.
