Magnus Church of England Academy, Newark pupils are through to the northern finals of Global Rock Challenge

Pupils from Magnus Church of England Academy, Newark, are through to the northern finals of a dance, drama and design competition.

They won the Lincolnshire area heat of Global Rock Challenge, which took place at the Meres Leisure Centre, Grantham, earning themselves a place in the next stage of the competition, which will take place in Grimsby in June.

Rock Challenge competitions are professionally-produced events that involve students putting together a performance of dance, drama and design lasting five to eight minutes.

Plastic In The Ocean was the theme for the Magnus piece, with students aiming to educate both themselves and the audience about the devastating effect of plastic on ocean wildlife.

The performers transformed themselves into sea life creatures to take the audience on an eye-opening underwater journey.

Students spent the day rehearsing in front of the other teams that were competing, and then performed to a live audience of friends, family and a panel of judges.

Teams were judged on production, design and performance, with awards being given for excellence in particular areas.

The Magnus production gained ten awards of excellence and the first place trophy.
