More than 50 pupils attended a new breakfast reading club at Lover’s Lane Primary School, Newark.

The Read and Feed scheme, set up by the head, Sarah Holland, takes place in the school hall every morning.

And the Warburton Road school’s very own superhero, Book Man, was there to hand out pancakes and encourage the 52 pupils who attended to read books.

The new club, which takes place at 8.30am every day, is part of a drive to encourage pupils to improve their literacy skills.

Pupils were also encouraged to read poems during half-term, with gold certificates presented to those who read more than 38.

The deputy head, Mr Jason Webster, who donned the Book Man outfit on Monday, said: “The scheme started last week and we have had 15 or 20 children a day attending.

“The scheme will run all year and Book Man will be there every morning.”

Mr Webster, who cooked pancakes for the pupils in the hall, hopes the school will acquire enough funds to expand the library in order to improve literacy skills further.
