Southwell councillor Peter Harris pushes for an improvement to glass recycling in Newark and Sherwood
A call has been made for kerbside glass recycling in Newark and Sherwood.
In a recent Advertiser column, Sherwood MP Mark Spencer called on Newark and Sherwood District Council to introduce a kerbside glass recycling scheme.
A petition on the issue was launched and signed by hundreds of people.
A Southwell town and district councillor has backed the campaign.
Peter Harris said: “There should be roadside collections. It is very disappointing [that it is taking so long].
“The district has one of the lowest recycling rates in the country.
“I agree that mixed recycling with glass is problematic, but other councils have managed.”
At present, glass must be taken to a bottle bank to be collected for recycling, which, it is said, could be a struggle for some residents.
Mr Harris said: “”It is inconvenient ans so it is difficult to encourage people to take glass to site.
“What we need to do is make recycling as easy as possible — the more barriers you put in the more difficult it becomes for people to recycle.
“Most people do want to recycle but they find it too difficult. We are just hoping that the minister enacts the legislation because that is critical to ensure that the district council and Nottinghamshire County Council work together to increase recycling rates.”
A district council spokesman said: “Newark and Sherwood District Council is continuing to explore options for a kerbside glass collection service, as this was one of the proposals put forward for consultation in the Government’s National Waste and Resources Strategy in late 2018.
“At this moment in time, we still await statutory guidance on what the requirements will be and how these will be funded.”
