Newark Quakers plant 200 trees at the foot of the Millenium Footbridge across the River Trent in response to climate concerns

Newark Quakers have converted their concern for climate change into action by planting 200 trees at the foot of the Millenium Footbridge across the River Trent.

The initiative was supported by the Canal and River Trust, which owns the land and donated seven species of native trees.

Saturday’s planting was attended by the town Mayor Lisa Geary.

Mrs Geary said: “The volunteers planting the trees and walkers passing by were all inspired to look forward ten and twenty and fifty years to how this site will benefit from the growth of the trees we were planting on a cold Saturday morning at the beginning of March.

“It was good to see the variety of species planted.”

About 18 Quakers and friends completed the planting in two hours and hope to plant 300 more.
