Race for life: Fun with a serious message
Sisters Miss Karen Hudson (48) of Kingsway, Balderton, and Mrs Shirley Hall (51) of Milton Street, Balderton, took part in memory of their aunt, Mrs Kathleen Stephenson, who died from breast cancer two years ago.
They wore pink policewomen outfits bought especially for the event.
Mrs Hall, a domestic assistant at The Oaks Care Centre, Balderton, said they took part in the event last year and planned to walk and run the course.
A group of 34 from John Hunt Primary School, Balderton, wearing pink wigs and bunny ears took part and carried the school’s flag.
They included teachers, teaching assistants, pupils and the head, Mrs June Braddow.
A teaching assistant, Mrs Lisa Burton (28) of Shakespeare Street, Balderton, said it was the first time they had taken part as a group.
Amanda Freeman (37) of Bleasby was one of a group of friends who wore their underwear on the outside of their clothes.
Amanda was running in memory of her father, Mr Vic Short, of Mapperley, who died of liver cancer six years ago.
She said: “It’s a very emotional day. It’s the second time I’ve done it and I think he’d be proud.”
Amanda said they decided to wear their underwear to stand out from the crowd.
She said: “It’s raising awareness and having a bit of fun at the same time.”
