There would be parking and a helicopter landing pad.

Plans for the five-storey building have been submitted to Newark and Sherwood District Council.

Rows of Labour election signs now flank the A1 boundary of Caledonian Mining at Carlton-on-Trent where Mr MacLeod is company chairman.

Mr MacLeod said: “I am still a Conservative but I think nationally New Labour with Tony Blair as leader will be better for business and for Britain than John Major and the Conservatives.”

A boom in house building this year is not meeting spiralling demand. New houses are being snapped up before the first brick has been laid.

The owner of a North Muskham cottage advertised the property for £4,000 and was so inundated by replies that he decided to sell at auction where it fetched £5,000.

FOR a second Tuesday in succession an organised procession of Newark’s unemployed took place.

Ninety-five men assembled at the Magnus Buildings and moved off in columns of four, headed by a band, for a parade of the town before finishing up with a call on the Relieving Officer of the Guardians.

THE Southwell Farmers’ Association held an open-air gala on Lowe’s Wong, which was well patronised.

OWING to the wintry weather the demand for boats was slow at the opening of the Newark Rowing Club season.

However, in defiance of parental injunction, many of the juvenile members have been taking advantage of the rain-bearing breeze to revive last year’s skill in sailing.

All small sails have been greatly in demand.

RECORD houses were experienced at the Palace Theatre, Newark, when the principal attraction was Ethel M. Dell’s The Knight Errant.

THE announcement of the Vicar’s grand Easter concert and the great attractions held out by the prospective visit of the famous operatic singers Madame G. Delmar and Mr J. Hall brought a large audience to the Parish Hall.

Unfortunately, it was announced at the last moment that Mr Hall was unable to be present but the disappointment was compensated by the able assistance of Rev Prentice (Kneesall) and the Vicar, the Rev G. H. C. Bartley.
