Renowned Newark shoplifter Daimien Temple jailed after being caught red-handed by sergeant

A renowned shoplifter has been locked up after being caught red-handed.

Daimien Temple, 44, helped himself to bottles of laundry detergent worth £63 from the Lincolnshire Co-Op, Churchill Drive, on Sunday (April 20), and was caught on CCTV leaving wihout paying for them.

New neighbourhood Sergeant Kate Taylor was in the back of the Newark shop reviewing this footage later that day, when she heard Temple had returned to the store.

The officer made her way out onto the shop floor, located Temple and placed him in handcuffs.

After other members of the neighbourhood team arrived, it quickly became apparent that Temple was wanted in connection with two other thefts.

The shoplifter had on April 12 stolen £61.40 of beef joints and lamb legs from Sainsbury’s, Balderton, and on April 13 took £49.10 worth steaks and salmon from Tesco Express, Balderton.

Temple, of Vessey Close, Newark, was subsequently charged with three shop thefts and pleaded guilty to the counts when he appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Monday (April 21).

He recieved an eight-month prison sentence during the hearing — which the court ruled was necessary as the offences were committed during the operational period of a suspended sentence, and because Temple ‘has a flagrant disregard for people and their property’.

He was also ordered to pay compensation to the value of the items stolen, and costs of £85.

Inspector Charlotte Ellam, District Commander for Newark and Sherwood, said: “Tackling shoplifting in Newark and across our district is one of our current neighbourhood priorities, so we’re really pleased with this result.

“Daimien Temple has a long record of shop thefts behind him, so it’s great to know he won’t be causing any problems for us while he’s in prison for the next few months.

“Sergeant Taylor did a great job responding to this situation as it developed — detaining a known offender in the process — with her actions setting a good example for the rest of our neighbourhood team.

“I’d also like to commend our officers who gathered the footage of Temple’s other thefts and circulated his name, so that he was immediately on our radar to be arrested when he showed up.

“By gathering all that evidence, Temple was left with no choice but to admit what he’d done when the thefts were put to him, so it was a great job all-round.”
