Southwell Town Council confirm plans to replant Minster Field hedge after significantly cutting back greenery
A council has assured it is to replant a hedge it has had to significantly cut back to get under control.
Southwell Town Council’s grounds staff have put four weeks worth of manpower into tackling the overgrown and poorly maintained hedge which runs alongside the footpath on Minster Field.
Peter Harris, speaking at a Town Environment committee meeting on January 15, said: “It’s actually widened that path significantly. What we’ve done is removed a lot of ivy and bits and pieces.”
The ownership of the hedge had for some time been contested as being either the Minster’s or Nottinghamshire County Council’s, previously described by the town council as a ‘grey area’.
After the installation of a fence by the cathedral, it was determined to be the responsibility of Southwell Town Council, who manage the playing field on behalf of the county council.
The hedge had been so overgrown that a bench had only recently been rediscovered having been taken over by foliage.
Now the council has assured that work is not fully complete — and the hedge will be replanted in due course.
The area will be allowed to mulch over summer, before replanting takes place.
The type of hedge will be decided by the council at a later date.
