Gunthorpe residents are being advised by Nottinghamshire Police to evacuate

Residents in Gunthorpe are being advised to leave their homes this evening (Monday) as a number of properties and surrounding roads are expected to be flooded overnight.

The advice comes following Environment Agency flood warnings to people in the area to take action due to the risk of flooding, which is expected to take place in the early hours of tomorrow morning (Tuesday).

A rest centre has been made available at Southwell Leisure Centre for those affected if needed.

As part of the multi-agency response, affected residents will also be visited to ensure they receive the advice, while Nottinghamshire Police and Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service will also be working together in the area throughout the night.

Superintendent Suk Verma, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "We have taken the decision to advise people to leave their homes now as the flooding is expected to impact the area in the early hours of the morning when people may be asleep.

"Whilst it is always difficult to predict the exact impact, current flood predictions show this area will be affected and we would urge people to leave while it is safe rather than risk the need to be rescued later."

This comes after residents of Tolney Lane caravan site in Newark were urged to relocate to Newark Lorry park this evening as River Trent levels are expected to rise.
