A Newark man who fought in the second world war is to return to Egypt, where he saw active service.

Mr Clifford Barthorpe, 86, of Staunton Road, has received a £2,825 grant from the Big Lottery Fund to return to Egypt in May.

The trip is part of the Heroes Return 2 programme, enabling former servicemen to travel back to the places where they fought for their country.

Mr Barthorpe visited the graves of fallen comrades in Sicily five years ago with a grant from the Big Lottery Fund's first Heroes Return programme.

He said: "I want to go back to some of the places I saw then, to see how they've changed. It's a nostalgic trip for me, a chance to remember how lucky I was to come home."
