Riders needed for charity effort
Cyclists are being urged to sign up to take part in an annual charity ride.
Reach Off Road, formerly known as Tonya’s Challenge, is on May 7.
Money raised goes to the charity Reach, which has bases in Newark, Southwell and Mansfield, and supports around 200 people with learning disabilities across Nottinghamshire
Its biggest base is in Newark, which supports around 100 people.
Last year’s bike ride raised around £8,500.
This year riders can choose from five, ten, 20 or 37-mile routes.
People can enter individually, as part of a team or with family.
Sarah Cobb, fundraising officer for Reach, said: “Cyclists up for a challenge can test their stamina on our 20 or 37-mile off-road routes, while those seeking a more relaxed Sunday outing can enjoy the scenic Trent Valley views on our gentler five and ten-mile routes.”
Sarah said the charity needed to raise a total of £300,000 this year to continue its work and sponsorship money went directly towards the services provided by Reach.
The charity is giving away a £1,000 bike, provided by sponsors Rode Cycles, to the adult rider who raises the most sponsorship.
A trophy will be presented to the rider under 12 who raises the most.
“We hope people will join us for a great day full of laughter, adventure and our famous cake stops,” said Sarah.
Tonya’s Challenge was founded in 2000 by Tonya Hinds and her grandmother, Beryl Smith, both of Southwell, to raise money for Southwell Care Project.
The project changed its name and became Reach Learning Disability.
Tonya, a client of the project, is no longer involved in the organisation of the event.
