District and county councillor for Balderton Johno Lee fears Fernwood traffic chaos near A1 could lead to 'loss of life'

There is a risk of 'loss of life' if urgent changes aren't made to roadworks at Fernwood, according to a councillor.

District and county councillor for Balderton Johno Lee told the Advertiser more than 100 residents contacted him over social media and by telephone this morning as residents were caught in unexpected traffic at Fernwood (on the B6326).

It comes after temporary traffic lights were installed either side of Fernwood bridge as work continues at the new service station off the A1.

"There is a risk of loss of life if something isn't done urgently," said Mr Lee.

"The traffic was absolute carnage this morning.

"I am disappointed that lessons haven't been learnt after what happened last time.

"I've had over 100 messages on social media and by telephone this morning."

Mr Lee said he had contacted officers at both Newark and Sherwood District Council and Nottinghamshire County Council for an explanation.

He also said he should have received documents detailing the works at least a week ago.

Many drivers ignored the changing of the lights from green to red coming from the Fernwood side towards Balderton this morning, which meant that on some occasions, not a single vehicle was able to pass the other way before the sequence changed again.

The route in the direction was further hampered by the pedestrian crossing that tripped the permanent traffic lights to allow people to cross.

The Tawny Owl roundabout was also snarled meaning it was difficult for motorists to turn on to Fernwood Business Park and the Suthers School due to standing traffic.

The roadworks are connected to the development of a petrol station services between the Balderton roundabout and the A1.
