The hole appeared in the carriageway on Kirkgate on Saturday night and the road has been closed.

Businesses are being affected by the road closure in Newark due to a hole in the road.

The hole appeared in the carriageway on Kirkgate on Saturday night and the road was closed due to safety reasons.

But George Finney, whose business Discount Beds is located on Kirkgate, said that his delivery was unable to unload due to the road closure.

The van had to park on Wilson Street instead and the beds and mattresses had to be carried into the shop.

He said: "We had to carry the beds in from round the back of the shop ourselves and they were really heavy.

"There was also a parking warden trying to give us a ticket because we couldn't park there."

Gary Clurow of Kirkgate Health Foods, added: "I hope the problem will be fixed by tomorrow as I'm due a delivery here then."

A spokesman for Osbournes stationary store on Kirkgate added: "We knew it was only a matter of time before the road fell apart again, this has happened before (you can read this story here)."

Ian Harrison, markets manager for Newark Town Council, said that it is hoped that the road will be mended and open again before the European Juggling Convention, which takes place at the weekend.

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire County Council confirmed that Severn Trent are looking into the problem and they are awaiting more information.

It is not known at this stage how long Kirkgate will be closed for, but it has also been confirmed that the one way system on Wilson Street has been suspended while Kirkgate is closed.

Severn Trent spokesperson said: "We’re currently working with the council to identify the cause of a hole in the road on Kirkgate, and will be investigating our sewer pipes for any defects.

"If our investigations do find any problems, it will be our priority to fix it as quickly as possible."
